5 Quick and Easy Tips to Prepare Your Home for Summer:

Tip 1: Check Your Home’s Air Conditioner

You may have covered your home’s central air conditioner unit outside your home to protect it from snow and ice, but you should remove this cover before you turn the device on. As you are removing the air conditioners cover, check it to determine if there are any weeds or other plants around it. You should remove these items so that air will flow freely into the air conditioner to cool your home. Inside your home, make sure to change the air conditioner’s air filter and turn on the air conditioner to determine if it is working. If the air conditioner doesn’t emit cool air, then you should have it repaired before the temperature outside gets extremely hot.

Tip 2: Check Your Home’s Windows and Screens

Check your home’s windows and screens for problems such as broken panes of glass or torn screens that require replacement. Open and close the windows to confirm that the items are sliding optimally. You may need to spray a lubricant on the edges of the windows to make it easier to open and close the items. Check for openings around the windows where insects can enter or where cool air can escape so that you can fill the crevices with liquid caulking.

Tip 3: Inspect Your Home’s Gutters, Downspouts, and Roof

Harsh winter weather can damage your home’s roof, downspouts or gutters, and if these items are in bad condition, then moisture from summer rains can cause additional problems for the underlying structures of your home. You will need to use an extension ladder to look at the roof and other parts of your home, but if this job is too complicated for you, then you can hire a handyman to perform the inspection. If there are any problems with these items, then you should contact a professional roofer to fix the roof, downspouts or gutters.

Tip 4: Check Your Home for Pests

During the winter, pests may have invaded your home through the foundation or attic, so you should look for signs of vermin. Look for tufts of fur from rodents or exoskeletons from insects. Before summer arrives, clean the inside of your home thoroughly, getting rid of clutter while looking for pests such as mice, cockroaches, or ants. While you are cleaning, you can apply essential oils such as peppermint or lavender that will deter many common pests.

Tip 5: Clean the Lawn outside Your Home

Walk around the outside of your home to clean the lawn. You may find trash that can attract pests, or you may have dead branches that have fallen from trees. If you have outdoor plumbing fixtures such as faucets near the garage or a garden, then test these devices to confirm that the items are in tiptop condition so that you can water your vegetable plants and wash your vehicle throughout the summer.
